How to register a Saudi .sa domain:
rules, cost and steps.
An individual can register .sa with no commercial registration. .com.sa is a different story — and that is where most first applications fail.
.sa is open to individuals. .com.sa is not.
Any Saudi national — or a resident holding premium residency — can register a .sa domain directly, with no commercial registration required. A .com.sa domain is restricted: it is reserved for entities conducting commercial activity, and requires either a valid commercial registration from a competent Saudi government authority or a registered local trademark or trade name.
This is where most first-time applications come unstuck. People reach for .com.sa out of habit, get rejected, and conclude that Saudi domains are bureaucratic. They are not — the extension was simply wrong. Registration also goes through a licensed registrar, not the authority directly; only government entities register via the Digital Government Authority. Names run from 2 to 63 characters per label.

Who is eligible to register a .sa domain?
The regulations designate .sa for "any natural or legal person", which puts individuals and companies on equal footing. But the general eligibility rules still require at least one of the following:
- An entity established in Saudi Arabia
- A Saudi national with a national ID, or a resident with premium residency
- A licensed entity
- The owner of a registered trademark or trade name
Being an individual is not the obstacle. A connection to the Kingdom is the requirement.

Other Saudi extensions exist: .net.sa, .org.sa, .sch.sa, .edu.sa, .med.sa, .pub.sa and .gov.sa, plus the Arabic-script .السعودية. Each carries its own eligibility conditions.
What documents do you need?
For .sa as an individual: proof of national ID or premium residency. For .com.sa: a copy of the valid commercial registration, or the trademark or trade name registration certificate.
Your registrar may ask for more depending on its own process, so check its requirements page before you start.
What does a Saudi domain cost?
There is no single published price. The regulations only state that the authority may impose a fee for the service; the actual price is set by each licensed registrar. Among the prices published at the time of writing, Sahara Net advertises Saudi domain registration at SAR 60 for the first year.
What matters more than the first-year price is the renewal price, and most registrars do not publish it clearly. Ask before you pay. The rule we apply everywhere: work out two years, not one, and compare on that.
Is there a free .sa domain?
No. Nobody gives a .sa domain away permanently.
What you will find is a domain bundled with a hosting plan, where the host covers the first year. That is not free, it is deferred — you pay it at renewal. And in most bundles the included domain is a global extension like .com, not a Saudi one.
If saving money is the goal, the useful question is not "how do I get it free" but "what does it cost me over three years".
Can you buy a domain for life?
No. Domains are leased, not owned, and your claim to the name depends on renewing it. Anyone offering a "lifetime domain" is either renaming a long subscription or selling something they have no right to sell.
Stop renewing and the name returns to the market. That is not a Saudi rule — it is how the domain name system works everywhere.
Does a .sa domain help local SEO?
Here is our view, offered as judgement built on experience rather than a measured test we have published: a country-code domain like .sa is a clear geographic signal and does tilt things your way inside Saudi search results. But it is one signal among many, and site speed, content quality and links all carry more weight. .sa will not rescue a site with weak content.
The flip side is that it narrows you geographically. If your audience is Gulf-wide or pan-Arab, .com may serve you better — or register both and point one at the other. Let the audience decide the extension, not the reverse.
Who are the licensed .sa registrars?
You cannot register directly with the authority. The licensed names published on the registry's site at the time of writing:

- Hawsabah — Hawsabah Technology
- NourNet — Nour Internet, part of Nour Communications
- T2 — Business Research and Development

- Pick the right extension. Individual with no commercial registration? .sa. Have a commercial registration and want the familiar commercial form? .com.sa.
- Check the name is available using a licensed registrar's search tool.
- Choose a licensed registrar from the authority's list — see the section below.
- Get your documents ready before you start — ID for individuals, commercial registration for companies.
- Check the renewal price, not just the first-year price.
- Turn on auto-renew, and put the expiry date in your calendar as a backstop.
