Domains: buy once, buy right.

A domain is the cheapest line item in your project and the most irritating one to get wrong. This is what to know before you pay: how the extensions differ, what renewal actually costs, and when a local domain is in your interest.

Before you read

This category is built on published rules, not on testing we paid for.

We keep two kinds of content apart and we will say which is which. The hosting category covers companies we bought with our own money and ran for 30 days. The domains category is built on published regulations and published prices — we read the registry rules and the registrars' pricing pages, and we date every review. You will not find a number here that we credited to a test we never ran.

Four facts

If you read nothing else.

01

Domains are leased, not owned

Your claim to the name depends on renewing it. There is no such thing as a lifetime domain.

02

The renewal price is the price

Work out two years minimum. The first year is usually promotional.

03

"Free" means deferred

A domain bundled with hosting is paid for at renewal, and it is usually a .com.

04

The extension follows the audience

A local domain for a local audience. For a wider Arab audience, .com is safer.

After the domain

Hosting is the expensive decision.

A domain costs less than a coffee a month. Hosting is the line item worth your time — and it is the one where we bought and tested 12 companies.
